What will it cost to build with ICF's compared to wood and metal framing?
- It will add anywhere from 3 to 10% to the price of a new home.
What will an ICF home look like?
- An ICF home will look like exactly any framed house. The only difference you may
notice will be the thickness of your walls at your window and door frames.
What kind of siding can you put on the exterior?
- You can use any kind of siding you like; brick, stucco, hardi, vinyl, permacrete,
wood, stone, you name it.
Can you put sheetrock on the inside?
- Yes, most ICF homes do get sheetrocked. It is applied directly to the ICF wall
surface. There are either metal or plastic firring strips on 6 or 12 inch centers
embedded in all quality ICF blocks.
How do you run electrical wires and plumbing through the blocks?
- Electrical wiring is installed using a hot knife that cuts a groove out of the foam.
Plumbing is installed mainly in interior walls but can also be set in exterior walls
prior to stacking the block.
How do you build interior walls in an ICF home?
- Interior walls in an ICF home are built exactly the same as in a conventional
home.
What kind of roof do you put on an ICF home?
- You have all the roofing options you would have with a conventional home.
Will an ICF wall system save me money on utility bills?
Are ICF's fireproof?
- Almost. They are rated from 2 to 4 hours as a firewall.
Are ICF walls termite and ant proof?
- Termites can bore through the foam but they would also have to bore through the
concrete. Some blocks such as Polysteel are actually manufactured with a chemical
repellant built in.
How strong is an ICF home? Will it handle a hurricane?
- ICF walls are rated 2 to 4 times stronger than the maximum wind load required by the
Uniform Building Code and they can withstand debris driven by 250mph winds.
